How To Stand Out From The Crowd At Work

posted on: 2012-10-02

You have the job you want and now you want to take advantage of the available opportunities there. There are several small steps you can take to make sure you get where you want to go.

Participate

Go beyond performing your duties as required by your role. They say what you put into something is equal to what you will get out of it. Why not make the most of it?

Does your team have weekly meetings? Speak up and let your comments and ideas be known. By voicing what you think you are letting your manager know you care about the issues being discussed. Are there team committees for fun days at work? Volunteer.

Participation shows that you are willing and capable of taking on a leadership role. This may come in handy when a promotion comes your way. Your manager will also see you in a favourable light when it comes time for your performance evaluation.

Don’t Gossip

Tempting though it may be to catch up on the latest gossip at work, don’t. You never know whos ears may be on the receiving end. You certainly don’t want it to be your boss, and you definitely don’t want to be identified as the one who started it. This brings us to our next point.

Be Solution-Oriented

If you are concerned with a situation at work ask to your speak to your boss privately. Asking for clarification or validity to a situation or rumour you may have heard demonstrates your willingness to get to the truth of the matter.

Offering your assistance on a positive note is beneficial to both your boss and your team. Once the air has been cleared and viable solutions have been made, the team can get back on track and work towards its common goals.

Be The Person You Want To See At Work

Is there someone that you admire on your team? Does this person exude a positive attitude and make their job look effortless? Seek this person out and ask if you can shadow them or ask their advice. By aligning yourself with the people you would like to be like at work you will make your job more enjoyable. And enjoying what you do is a reward in itself.
